Manuel Jose de Quiros

Manuel  Jose de Quiros  (-1765)

Manuel was a Guatemalan composer, teacher and collector. On March 7, 1738 he was appointed maestro de capilla of Guatemala City Cathedral, and he served there until his death. His 28 compositions are mainly Spanish villancicos which reveal his interest in local colour and ethnic texts, there are also some compositions in Latin. Manuel had interest in Italian music which was encouraged by the Italian-born maestro de capilla of Mexico City, Ignacio Jerusalem.

As a collector, he collected compositions from Italian musicians Galuppi, Leo, Pergolesi, Porpora and Vinci, Spanish composers Sebastián Durón, José Nebra and José de Torres y Martínez Bravo, and by various other composers from the New World, like Manuel de Zumaya. Because of his collections, compositions of Gaspar Fernandes, Pedro Bermúdez, Palestrina and Victoria survived. Manuel’s collections remain in the Archivo Histórico Arquidiocesano.
